Testing an inconspicuous area before you treat anything
Colour bleed is the one upholstery failure with no repair. How a colourfastness test is actually performed, where to do it, and how to read the result.
Most upholstery damage can be argued with. Pile that has dried flat can often be brushed back. A ring can sometimes be re-cleaned out to the seam. Colour bleed cannot. Once dye has migrated out of one area and into another, the fabric is a different colour in a different pattern and nothing puts it back.
That asymmetry is the whole argument for testing. The test costs two minutes.
Where to test
The test has to happen somewhere that will not matter if it goes wrong, which rules out the middle of the seat. Usable places on a typical piece:
- the underside of a seat cushion, on the face fabric rather than the deck
- the back panel, low down and behind the piece
- inside a cushion cover, along the zip flap
- the skirt hem, on the reverse
- an offcut, if the piece was reupholstered and any fabric was kept
Test each distinct colour separately. A print with four colours is four tests; dyes in the same fabric do not behave alike, and it is usually a single saturated colour — a red, a deep indigo, a strong turquoise — that runs while everything around it holds.
How the test is done
Use a white, undyed cloth. This matters twice over: a coloured cloth can transfer its own dye into the fabric you are testing, and it hides the very thing you are looking for.
Apply a few drops of the product you intend to use — the actual product, at the actual dilution. Testing with water and then cleaning with a detergent tests nothing.
Then blot, do not rub. Press an absorbent white cloth or pad onto the wetted area and hold it. Rubbing distorts the fabric, damages pile, and produces mechanical colour transfer that would not have happened in normal use, so it gives you a false failure as easily as it damages the fabric.
Lift the cloth and look at it in daylight.
Reading the result
Any colour on the white cloth is a fail. Not “a lot of colour” — any. The smallest visible tint means the dye is mobile in that product, and what shows as a faint stain on a test cloth becomes a migrating edge across a seat cushion once the whole panel is wet.
Two further checks are worth making while you are there. Give the test area a full drying cycle and look again: some damage appears only on drying, as a ring at the edge of the wetted patch or as a browned patch in the middle. And check whether the fabric’s texture has changed — a hardened, stiff or shrunken test patch is its own fail, independent of colour.
Dwell time is part of the test
Cleaning products are meant to sit on the soil for a period before removal so the chemistry has time to work. That period is the dwell time, and it is part of the treatment, not a delay before it.
It follows that a test which lets the product sit for three seconds has not tested the treatment you are going to apply. If the intention is to leave a product for several minutes, the test has to leave it for several minutes too. A fabric can be perfectly stable for thirty seconds and bleed freely at five minutes.
What a failed test tells you
A fail is information, not a dead end. It says this product on this fabric is not safe, which usually leaves three options: a different chemistry, a much lower-moisture method, or a professional.
What it never means is that a gentler hand will get away with it. Dye mobility is chemistry, not force. Being careful with a product the dye is soluble in produces a slower, blurrier version of the same failure.
